Fitbit

Today, Adventure Retreat Leader Patt Osborne of Boomer Chick Adventures wants to give a shout out to Fitbit.

Here's what she has to say... "What I love about my Fitbit is that it’s compact and easily slides onto my running clothes, and is simple to use. It tracks my amount of steps, my distance, my calories burned, and then sends me an email or text about how well (or poorly) I did. It keep me motivated to do go further when I’m feeling I want to slow down or even quit."

Thanks Patt. See you on the trail!

Shhhhhhhhh... Quiet

Just today Patt and I were talking about all the noise out there. It seems everyone wants you to know what they are up to.

We've both received photos and texts about what's for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Or how the surf, birds, woodpeckers and even seaweed have effected a friend's life. And there's always the important and popular weather report from friends around the world.

So it's no small leap to go from the "noise" your friends and acquaintances add to your life to the chatter those who are marketing to you introduce though various media, not the least of which is email. And, yes, I'm reacting to this holiday season. Whew.

Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking is a book I'm drawn to. Admittedly I rebel at the word "Introvert." I'm not fond of labels. There are varying degrees of introvert and varying ways in which one can be an introvert. I prefer we all talk about ourselves in complete sentences rather than use labels. But that aside, we all need some Quiet in our lives. And whether we are an introvert or an extrovert, retreats in nature is one way to recharge. This book, by Susan Cain, will give you some insights. Enjoy!

Convert Interest To Adventure Retreat Participants

Often we spend much time planning, preparing and publishing our upcoming Adventures and we ignore converting interest to participants. How many times have you enthusiastically shared a planned outing with someone only to find they have disappeared when you're ready to convert their expressed interest to an enthusiastic participant? The 3, 4, 5 or more individuals you were expecting to register can't be found.

This is common. Our excitement about our offering spills over when we are initially talking to others about our Adventure Retreat plans. They say things like "let me know when" or "I want to do that." But what are they responding to? Well, you, your energy and your personal excitement about delivering the outing.

What do you want these interested folks to respond to? What's in it for them is the best way to convert interest to participants. Practice your language. Know your getaway benefits and how they will inspire, help, energize and give to your participants. So drop the "I" language. It's not about you. Even drop the "We" language. It's not about you and your participants. Engage others with the word "You." It's about them.

Use your conversation to put each person you talk with in the middle of your offering now. Practice.

Autonomous Tent

Here's a intriguing potential retreat venue. Tell us what you thing about Autonomous Tents from Autonomous Tent Co

On one hand, we're intrigued by the ability to erect a temporary retreat site, for say a season of retreats, and take it down without leaving a trace (as the website emphasizes).
On the other hand, how do you feel about so many "portable" homes cropping up in remote places.

Would love to hear your thoughts.

What are the 3 elements that comprise a retreat them? How do you express them? Do your participants understand what it is you are offering when you advertise your Retreat or Outing or Getaway or Adventure?

Join Adventure Coach Deb Martin in a one-hour brainstorming session designed to help you better understand what your retreat theme is and how you can express it through metaphors. Please bring your questions and your ideas as they related to what “Using Metaphors to Design Your Retreat Themes” means to you. A Perfect Gift For A Referral

Many of us offer "buddy" discounts for our outings; that is, bring a buddy and you each come for less. Or we might offer referral discounts; that is, refer a participant and get $'s off your next registration. These are wonderful ways to build your business. Especially in the beginning when just one extra person can make the difference between whether or not your adventure is a go.

Recently, however, I received a gift for a referral. It was the perfect gift; a $25 gift certificate to my local restaurant. This gift was totally unrelated to what the person was selling. Personally, I did not want what they were selling. But I liked them and I wanted to help.

I'm betting that many people don't want to go on your retreat. And they don't want a tee shirt or a hat advertising our outings either. But they do want to refer. So think about the person who just sent you a new adventurer and give the "perfect" gift.

Explore National Parks in the U. S.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
Here's a website I go to often when I'm looking for inspiration for my next Adventure Retreat; The U. S. National Park Service.

It's not even necessary to create an offering in a National Park (although these parks are so inspiring they can do much of your work for you). Just land on the page and go exploring. Something you see on this site will inspire a location and a theme. I promise.

And if you're interested in learning about the rules for offering an Adventure Retreat in a U. S. National Park, consider signing up for Deb and Patt's Live Teleclass Series to Leading Adventure Retreats in Nature and ask the question about National Parks when we discuss locations for your offerings. We are happy to elaborate.

See you in the Park!

Get Your Personal Adventure Retreat Needs Met

It's true. We are Adventure Retreat Leaders because we personally love being on adventure and in retreat. And we often assume we will get our fix by leading adventures and retreats.Yet, it's not the same.

Want to be an outstanding Adventure Retreat Leader? Then go on another leader's offering. Or go on your own private outing.

How often? It's up to you. But we suggest at least twice a year. Better yet, once each season is lovely.

And by the way, Patt and I offer a guide to your next Adventure Retreat called The Rest of Your Life. It's a good start to getting your Adventure Retreat needs met. Enjoy!

David Whyte Tours

Do you know David Whyte? He's one of my favorite poets and authors. You can learn more about David at his website, DavidWhyte.com

And in the spirit of Adventure, I want to tell you today about his walking tours.

David has two tours this year, one last July in the West of Ireland and one coming up the end of August in the Hills of Tuscany.

He's been doing these tours for awhile. If you can't make the last-minute trip this year, put David on your radar and prepare for next year. In preparation, here's one of my favorite books by David Whyte.

Raise Your Fees

What!? But you say, "I just got started. I need to beta test and develop my business through attracting participants with my very reasonable prices!"

Well if you want to keep your Adventure and Retreat offerings full for the long run, consider raising your rates now.

Most of us, when we start our business, tend to offer a lot of value to our participants while undercharging for our services because we want to build our business. But what we are often doing is training our participants and customers to expect a lot of value for little money. When you finally get tired of working so very hard for so very little money, it's hard to raise your rates because you've developed a certain kind of client who expects you to continue to deliver a lot for low prices.

Raise your fees now. Attract the kind of participant who is willing to pay for value. Deliver all you promised and more. Enjoy being a quality Adventure and Retreat Leader and appreciate the good income you make.

Adventure Center...Another Resource for You.

Whether you want to take an adventure yourself or get ideas for your own Adventure and Retreat offerings, Adventure Center will inspire you.

For instance, I put a couple of search criteria for offerings that would inspire me and found two great trips with details, including Overview, Itinerary, Dates and Prices, A Map, and The Operator. Will I take these trips? Maybe, maybe not. But they have both certainly given me some great ideas about offering an Adventure that interests me and some of the things my participants would expect.

What Bugs You? Tis The Season

Whose Right?

Your Adventure Retreat participants are of course. Even if they are not right, they are.

Yes, you need to manage your Adventure Retreat in a way that it ultimately delivers what you promised you would deliver what you advertised. This is what you promised and you have an obligation to follow through on that promise.

Here the areas you need to follow through on:
  • Start time and end time
  • The topic (if you have one) of your offering
  • Materials you promised
  • Activities you promised
  • The amount of time off (independent free time) you promised

Having said that, here are some areas where your participants are more right than you:
  • Some or all want to take more independent free time. Notice I did not say more time together. This is not your responsibility. If your participants want more time together, they will make that happen during their free time. But allow participants to wander away from an activity when they've had enough.
  • Some or all want to expand an activity or discussion, spending more time it in.
  • Some or all do not want to participate in an activity and/or a discussion. They are ready to sit out.
Here are some things you can do to make your offering more user-friendly:
  • Allow for more free time than you think is necessary. I like to fill about 25% of my retreat with group activities and 75% with independent activities and/or free time.
  • Present your material (if any) in a variety of ways. If your offering is heavy on group discussion and your participants do not know each other, find ways for those who are not participatory in nature to engage with the material. Patt and I like to offer independent reflection activities.
  • Make it safe (at the beginning of your adventure) for anyone to pass on a request to do a physical activity or share something personal at any time. This is how working with outfitters can be so great. When someone wants to pass, for instance, on running a rapids or climbing a rock wall, your outfitter will get them where they need to go to continue with the group.
Of course, the ideal Adventure is one in which everyone participates, enjoys your topic and hangs on your every word. But the ideal Adventure is also one in which your participants are made to feel right.

Wild Comfort: The Solace of Nature by Kathleen Dean Moore

Wild Comfort: The Solace of Nature by Kathleen Dean Moore is a thoughtful expression of what we all know about healing and answers found in Nature.

You'll be nodding your head and expressing your agreement throughout this read. It's not so much that Wild Comfort will teach you what you already know. It's that Wild Comfort will give you the words to express it and the joy in knowing others out there feel the same.

Enjoy!
